Speak Spanish quickly and fluently

Do you fancy a change? Perhaps a spell abroad or even a permanent life change?

If you do, it makes life so much easier if you can communicate with the locals in their own language. If, like me, you don't have a natural affinity with language learning, the whole concept of a acquiring a new language can be overwhelming.

Last year my family and I spent 6 months in Spain to try it out, let the children experience a different type of life and pick up some language. Hubby was fine, he did Spanish at school and has a pretty natural feel for language anyway so once he was there he was bold enough to speak with the locals and thus learned more and more. The children were fine. They entered Spanish schools and, as everyone tells you, they were soon chatting away to their classmates in Spanish. But as for me, however. I read the books, learned the verbs and helpful phrases like Permitame presentarle a mi secretario (May I introduce my secretary) but to no avail. One evening we went to a school parents' meeting- the teacher could have been speaking in Russian for all I could understand! It was so fast I spent the entire meeting in what can only be described as shock!

So, back to the point...a friend recommended a method which she thought was worth a go. It was and so I am passing it on to you...

The basic principle is

  1. Forget all the verb tables like you learned at school. These are great for written work but a hindrance to communicating like a 'normal' person!
  2. Visualise your Spanish words ie don't think 'Spanish for cat is el gato' think of a picture of a cat and remember 'el gato'.
  3. Remember mnemonics, the funnier the better, to remember useful phrases eg Hablar means to speak so remember an old, funny looking teacher speaking, saying 'A blah, a blah, a blah...'

By using these principles and a few more tricks of the trade, it really is pretty easy to communicate in Spanish very quickly by building on these basics.
